One of Canada’s most successful coaches and a pioneering leader in high performance, Debbie Muir continues to redefine how people learn, lead, and perform at their best.
As head coach of Canada’s national synchronized swimming team, Debbie guided her athletes to extraordinary success: 7 World Championship gold medals out of a possible 9, and 4 Olympic medals, including 2 gold. She also later helped coach Olympic champion Mark Tewksbury to his unforgettable 100-metre backstroke gold medal in Barcelona. Her international impact grew even further when she was recruited to Australia, where she transformed a last-place program into a world-leading team ahead of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
Beyond the medals and podiums, Debbie has dedicated her career to uncovering what truly drives sustainable excellence. She co-authored The Great Traits of Champions: Fundamentals for Achievement, Leadership, and Legacy with Mark Tewksbury, capturing the principles that power elite performance far beyond sport. Together, they co-founded Great Traits in 2008, creating practical frameworks that leaders at every level can use to reach new heights.
Her expertise has supported not only athletes and coaches, but also leaders in corporate, nonprofit, and academic sectors. She has worked with CEOs, frontline managers, educators, and volunteers alike — proving that the foundations of great performance apply to established leaders and to those just stepping into leadership for the first time. In 2004, Debbie played an instrumental role in shaping Canada’s national sport review process, designed to spotlight strengths, identify gaps, and accelerate improvement. This framework helped position Canadian athletes and organizations for their best-ever performance on home soil at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games.
Today, her legacy lives through the programs she has developed and delivered, the assessments and practical tools she has created, and the thousands of people who continue to apply them in their work and lives. The next evolution of this legacy is the Great Traits Performance Series. The first book in the series, The Leader’s Edge: A Collaborative Approach to Achieving Excellence, is designed for new managers, future talent, and emerging leaders — the up-and-coming performers who will shape tomorrow’s workplaces. By equipping them with the same foundations that fuelled world-class results on the international stage, Debbie’s mission is clear: to help every leader build the edge they need to perform, grow, and thrive.
